DOE Science Grid

A SciDAC Program Project

DOE Science Grid

Grids are a unified and integrated approach to building distributed, scientific computing environments that incorporate computation, data management, scientific instruments, and human collaboration. This multi-laboratory Collaboratory Pilot project is aimed at defining, integrating, deploying, supporting, evaluating, refining, and developing, the persistent Grid services needed for a scalable, robust, high-performance DOE Science Grid, thus creating the underpinnings for a DOE Science Grid Collaboratory Software Environment.

The goal in creating this infrastructure and tools will be to enable innovative approaches to scientific computing based on such concepts such as secure remote access to online facilities, distance collaboration, shared petabyte datasets, and large-scale distributed computation.

The objectives of this project are

  • Provide advanced services for authentication and resource discovery
  • Provide secure, uniform access to advanced resources at multiple DOE resource sites
  • Develop, deploy, and operate a DOE Science Grid-wide monitoring and auditing infrastructure
  • Investigate techniques for detecting and reacting to Grid-related faults
  • Investigate mechanisms and management of a rich, global namespace
  • Develop a Grid security model for open scientific computing environments
  • Carry out application outreach and support activities, such as documentation, tutorials, and focused support for key application groups.
This project is a collaboration among Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
